The right choice depends on where the gap is, how healthy the neighbouring teeth are and what you want the result to look like. This guide explains the main types of bridge, how each one works, and how to keep yours in good condition for years to come.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that “bridges” the space left by one or more missing teeth. A false tooth (called a pontic) sits in the gap and is held in place by the teeth on either side, or by dental implants. Unlike a denture, a bridge is cemented permanently in your mouth, so you do not take it out to clean it.

Replacing a missing tooth does more than restore your smile. It stops the surrounding teeth drifting out of position, helps you chew and speak comfortably, and maintains the natural shape of your face.

The main types of dental bridge

Resin-Bonded Bridges (adhesive or “sticky” bridges)

A resin-bonded bridge – sometimes called an adhesive bridge, Maryland bridge or simply a glued bridge – uses a thin metal or porcelain wing that is bonded to the back of an adjacent tooth with strong dental adhesive. The false tooth is attached to this wing.

The big advantage is that very little of the natural tooth needs to be removed, so it is one of the most conservative options available. Resin-bonded bridges are ideal for replacing a single front tooth, particularly in younger patients, and they are usually quicker and more affordable than a conventional bridge. Because they rely on a bonded wing rather than a crown, they are best suited to areas that take lighter biting forces.

Conventional Bridges (fixed-fixed bridges)

A conventional bridge anchors the false tooth to crowns placed on the teeth either side of the gap. The supporting teeth are gently reshaped to take these crowns, which makes this option more involved than a resin-bonded bridge – but also extremely strong and stable. Conventional bridges are a good choice for replacing teeth towards the back of the mouth, where biting forces are higher, or where the neighbouring teeth would benefit from crowns anyway.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Where several teeth are missing, or the neighbouring teeth are not strong enough to act as supports, a bridge can be fixed onto dental implants instead. This avoids placing any load on the natural teeth and offers a very secure, long-lasting result.

Which bridge is right for me?

The best option depends on a few key factors:

• Position of the gap – front teeth are often well suited to resin-bonded bridges, while back teeth usually need the strength of a conventional or implant-supported bridge.
• Health of the neighbouring teeth – if the adjacent teeth are already heavily filled or would benefit from crowns, a conventional bridge can make sense.
• How much natural tooth you want to preserve – resin-bonded bridges remove the least amount of healthy tooth.
• Your budget and timeframe – adhesive bridges are typically quicker and more economical.
