DENTAL HYGIENE

Dental hygiene is about taking care of your teeth and mouth by keeping them clean with daily teeth brushing and also cleaning between the teeth.

Regular check-ups at the dentist are important, as is eating non-erosive foods, following a healthy lifestyle and avoiding injury and smoking. Good oral hygiene will help to prevent plaque build-up and tartar, which can lead to bad breath, tooth decay, bleeding gums (gingivitis), and eventually periodontal disease

It is important to prevent the latter as untreated periodontal disease can eventually result in loss of teeth and has been proven to increase risks of developing heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease, difficulties with pregnancy and other medical conditions.

Fortunately seeing a hygienist regularly can ensure the health of your teeth and gums, by removing any deposits of tartar and plaque, both above and below the gum. They will then polish your teeth to restore your smile. As part of your appointment, your hygienist can review your oral hygiene techniques, and if necessary, provide advice to help you maintain your dental health at home.

A normal appointment lasts 30 minutes, and can be scheduled around the time of your routine examination, in order to reduce the number of attendances required at the practice.
